With everyone at our table staring at us in the aftermath of the beer-splosion, I have no choice but to respond in kind.

“Oh, that’s so nice, but I’ve got it,” I say to Taylor, nodding.

“It’s no trouble, really,” she says, coming still closer.

I take a labored breath, beginning to grasp what she’s after.

“It looks like your drink didn’t spill. Go ahead and enjoy your tequila.”

But Taylor’s not stopping for anything, almost making me think she’s ready to rush at me right here in the middle of the bar.

“Your top is staining and becoming a bit see-through,” she says, pursing her lips. “Unless you want to try to win a contest, I’ve got another top under this jersey.”

I look down and cringe at the sight of my side and waist visible straight through my shirt. Some of the polka dots on my bra are showing. Nice.

But being embarrassed is one thing, and being assaulted by a lunatic who’d tried to stab me to death more than once is another. I don’t know what’s in her little purse, but the most lethal thing in mine is some chapstick.

Taylor won’t be denied though, and I don’t see what I could possibly say in front of everyone to change the outcome here. If she wants to follow me to the bathroom, I don’t have any way to stop her. The thought crosses my mind that I could simply leave now that I’ve gotten some new information, but she could simply follow me out too.

Being out on the streets with her might be worse.

I give her my game face and then turn for the bathroom between other tables, past other servers who seem to have much steadier hands than Shaylene, and past the kitchen, which gets my stomach rumbling. Is that barbecue chicken?

I shake my head, trying to get it back on track. Unless there’s a party in the bathroom, I anticipate the confrontation we’re going to have, trying to figure out what to do. She’s already ruined my plans of being the life of this party with fun stories and jokes, but she did commiserate about a tough day’s work complying with the FBI.

I wonder if she was nervous being around federal law enforcement while Alice’s body is barely cold in a morgue. Was Taylor spending the entire day imagining her revenge against me and is now jumping at the first chance?

I still don’t understand how she managed to get out of Hochatown at all.

The maroon bathroom doors are ahead of me, and I take the second one for women, stepping into the modestly sized facility with three sinks and as many stalls. At least it isn’t a single bathroom jamming us together for our rematch.

I’ve already turned and have my hands up as she steps through the door, letting it close on its own behind her. Although there’s a chance that someone might be in one of the stalls, my gut feeling is we’re alone in here.

She’s got a hardened, weary droop to her oval face, which isn’t looking as pretty as it did when we first rolled into Hochatown.
