ALEX

The bell above the door chimed as I stepped into the Cross Accounting office. The building was a stand-alone that sat at the east side of town across from the Braeden Creek Diner. The scent of coffee drifted on the air.

A smile tugged at my lips. The same one that formed when I woke wrapped around Rea this morning. We had taken our time getting out of bed since Rea didn’t need to be at work until nine. Then we showered together, made breakfast together, and it all felt like we’d done it every day for years.

A tiny voice in my head questioned having feelings so strong for a woman I just met. I pushed that voice of doubt away. My heart told me it was right. I was going with those instincts.

I moved toward the reception desk. The young woman behind the desk looked up from her computer and smiled. Sara. There was a family resemblance between her and her brother Joe from La Belle Notte.

“Morning, Mr. Cross,” Sara said, handing me a roll of blueprints. “Mayor Kinley dropped this off earlier.”

“Thank you.” I took the blueprints from her.

Just as I stepped into the hallway leading to the offices, Morgan stepped out of hers. She gave an impish grin. "Where did you disappear to last night? I was about to call Declan to put a APB out for you."

I chuckled, shaking my head at her familiar teasing. "Just had a nice evening out, that's all. Are you checking up on me, Kiddo?"

She rolled her eyes at the nickname but her smile widened. "Nice, huh?" She arched an eyebrow, obviously not buying the understatement. "From the fact that you never come home last night, I'd say it was more than just 'nice.' Rea must be something special to make you smile like that."

I surrendered with a playful roll of my eyes, knowing full well there was no dodging Morgan's keen observations. "Rea is... she's amazing. There's just something about her."

Morgan's hazel eyes softened, and her voice took on a rare note of tenderness. "I'm really happy for you, Alex. You deserve someone who makes your world brighter."

"Thanks," I replied, feeling a warmth spread through my chest that had nothing to do with the morning sun. "It feels different with her, you know? Our connection was instant, and it just feels right."

"Ooh, sounds serious!" She followed me to my temporary office with a hop in her steps. "Does this mean I should start planning a wedding or just a very elaborate second date?"

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," I said with a laugh, even though the idea didn't scare me as much as I thought it would. "But hey, who knows? With the way things are going..."

"Take your time, Alex," Morgan advised, her gaze sincere. "But between us, I think Rea's a catch. And seeing you this happy? It's about damn time."

“You don’t think it’s too fast? Or that I’m too old for her?” Those were a couple of the doubts that lingered in the back of my mind.
