Chapter Fifteen

My hands shaking at the surprise, I turned around to see a pair of bright blue eyes looming out of the shadow of the nearest book shelf. Recognizing them, I let out a hiss.

“Ciro! What are you doing?”

Giselle looked between us, unsure whether to draw attention to herself or not.

“I could ask you the same thing.” He stepped out of the shadows, his pale skin glinting as he stepped through a beam of moonlight. “I didn’t chalk you up to be much of a troublemaker.”

“And I immediately knew you were a troublemaker. So now what?” I put my hands on my hips, daring him to talk back to me.

“Well, like I said, do you need any help opening that door?” He gave me a small smile and my heart skipped a beat, which I’m sure he heard.

“Why?” I squinted at him suspiciously. “What’s in it for you?”

“I also happen to have business in there.” He didn’t offer any further explanation, but it wasn’t like I could say anything about it. We were both skulking around where we weren’t supposed to be, after all.

“Fine. But make it quick. I don’t want to get caught.” I stepped aside to let him move over to the door, standing next to Giselle. With a nod at me, she faded back into nonexistence, leaving me to do my investigating alone.

Ciro began pushing at the door in what looked like a random pattern, knocking on small areas of the wood lightly. I stared, wondering if he had lost his mind, and was about to ask him so, when there was a loud clicking sound and the door swung in a bit.

“How did you do that?” I followed him in through the door, quickly closing it behind us.

“I’ve been watching Professor Ortiz every time he comes up here.” He reached up and flicked the light switch right next to the door, flooding the small room in dim light. There were more stacks of books against all of the walls, some piled up on the floor and others in delicate glass cases. A large reading desk sat in the middle of the room with a lamp on it, two books wide open on top.

I crossed to the reading desk, sitting down in the chair and pulling one of the books toward me. “Why would you do that?”

“Ortiz is acting weird. Even Roque thinks so.” He wandered over to a nearby pile of books and began pulling it apart, glancing at the titles.

“Roque? You must be pretty close with him if you’re talking about stuff like that.” I pointed out, notice Ciro’s slight embarrassment at my words.

“Yeah, you could say that. He was the only teacher that accepted me after…” He trailed off, turning his attention to the books.

My curiosity urged me to ask him what had happened, but my common sense wrestled with it, not wanting to annoy Ciro when he had started having real conversations with me. Eventually, I gave in to my questions.

“After what?”

Ciro stiffened then let out a small sigh.
