How long can the human life span be extended?

While experiments on extending the life spans of other life forms have led some scientists to believe that a single human life may be capable of being extended well beyond a hundred years, science so far has not been able to place an upper limit to it. Nor is it likely to be able to predict the social effects of such a feat.

How does the earth’s interior work?

The theory of plate tectonics, according to which the earth’s crust is broken up into fragments that grate about its surface, is only skin deep, as it were. After all, below the tectonic plates, there are about 6300 km of molten rock and iron whose constant churning makes for much of the inner workings of the earth’s heat engine, which is a more complex device than originally assumed, giving rise to questions like: Can the earth’s magnetic orientation suddenly change? When is that likely to happen? What will be the consequences of such a change? The science of seismic imaging, our understanding of minerals and computer modelling are still at too nascent a stage to provide answers to such questions.
