Joshua stared up at the star-filled ceiling above his bed. They kissed. Bill and Ell. The man with the goats. The old guy, the owner of the summer sausage in his pants, kissed his wife. On the lips, no less, the same ones he kissed her on no moment ago.

Nodding against his pillow, same as when she told him, upon his emptying of the bottle of wine, she kissed him back. Took a bit to get her to not fudge. Picked up the extra detail of how after they’d finished tending to the goats, they’d sat a bit on Bill’s porch swing. Talking about the goats. About Jillian. Of Bill asking her if she thought it too soon for him to start socializing again.

A strange question to ask of her, being they were not close, Joshua slipped in, and Ell readily agreed. Then admitted she’d often find him, if not outright hitting on her, even with Jillian right there, it clearly came as flirting. Which, she confessed, she rarely called him out on. Might’ve given back as good as he gave. So, while they weren’t close, they’ve a history, of sorts. A possible mutual interest in each other. Yes, horribly sexist, or whatever they call it now a days, as to how adults of various gender can be friends, without it becoming sexual, but given the parameters of the contact, he’s guessing not in this case.

The swinging ended amicably. He kept his distance. The perfect gentleman. Offered refreshments. Lemonade. Fresh squeezed, she thought, but no real knowing. Then lunch. A salad. A splitting of a very good ham on rye sandwich. A piece of coffeecake he’d bought just that morning. And when it came time to leave. To go home to clean up before heading on to work, he caught her off guard, by what she surmised, he must’ve been planning all along for her.

A simple kiss goodbye. Or maybe of thanks. Twice. For after he kissed her, she kissed him. Probably not even awkward. Not planned. Simply letting her know he’s happy she came by.

Now, this. Bill’s asked her to stop by again this Saturday to help tend to the goats. She says she won’t, of course, if he asks her not to. Sees it in her eyes. Hears it in her voice, she’d like to. Asked him to think it over, till they can have a proper discussion, this Friday night after she gets home. After they’re both sober, and rested, to think it over. He’s pretty certain they both know there will be no debate. Only a growing anticipation, by both of them, as to her visiting the goats again.

“Yeah, right,” Joshua stated out loud. Then could not help smiling as to the benefit of their keeping separate beds. Can talk out loud to himself, and as long as he keeps it civil, no one the wiser. He’s no problem with her seeing the goats. Not the issue. It’s Bill.

He kissed her. She kissed him back. Thus, every reason for Bill to assume, if she returns, she enjoyed doing so.
