The Mossad’s new diamond

At the beginning of his career in the Mossad, Meir was part of the “Caesarea” Division, the division responsible for executing assassinations around the globe. Very quickly he was tagged by his commanders as a prodigy that should be groomed for command. He became the foster son of the head of the Mossad during those years, Avigdor Braun, who designated him for the position of head of the Tzoment division – the division engaged in the recruitment of agents. By doing so, Avigdor sought to give Meir an advantage on his continuous climb to the top, but not before he operated as a handler himself.

It was in the evening of an April day in 1983, when Meir’s eldest daughters were four and six years old, and the little one hadn’t been born yet – that he then dropped the bomb.

Over the years Atalya Harari was proud of her man and his contribution to national security. As a daughter of a rooted family who was raised on values of the sanctity of the land and the protection of it, she saw it as a great calling to raise a family together with this kind of man. However nothing since the beginning of their relationship had prepared her for the fact that she would need to break away from her country, homeland and family.

Meir knew the extent of the sacrifice she was asked to make. The moment in which he realized that the position would require him to relocate his family to Europe without a time limit, was one of the most stressful moments he had ever experienced. The mere knowledge that most of the time he will not be around at all, but will be endangering his life in some Arab country, only intensified his apprehension.

In that spring April evening, the moon was a thin crescent, and the skies were covered with feathered clouds. A cool night breeze blew through the valley passing through their yard. Atalya yearned for his return from his first preparatory tour of Belgium. She had no idea where he was or when he’ll be back.

Sometimes, the fact that her man had found himself another woman who calls herself a country, did not sit well with her, to say the least. She married him, not the country, she thought to herself, and that’s how she felt that night as well.

Meir chose not to knock on the front door, out of concern he might wake up the girls. He walked around the house toward the wide balcony which served as an entrance from the backyard into the living room. And there, in the yard, she sat on the swing he built for her with his own two hands during his first leave he had from the military, after Lihi, his eldest daughter was born.

As usual on chilly nights, Atalya was wrapped by an earth-toned cotton shawl, holding her cup of tea in both hands. He noticed the scented candle she lit in anticipation for his arrival, and this little gesture flooded him with yearning.
