It’s early morning. The GCTF have been summoned. They head to the scene in two cars. Carter drives. He has Delia and Anthony with him. Nick and Darren follow close behind.

“Why’ve we been called?” Anthony says. Anthony arrived to HQ after they received the call. They were already heading out to the cars when he turned up. “I ain’t clear on that. Why’ve we gotta go?”

“Cop killing,” Delia says. She’s sitting up front. Anthony is in the back. She turns to see him better. “Two dead.”

“Holy shit,” Anthony says. “What do we know?”

“Nothing yet,” Delia says. “Carter was called direct. They said they didn’t wanna put it over the radio, but we needed to come over fast.”

Carter glances in the mirror, checks that Nick and Darren are still behind. They are. The cop who called him is friendly to the GCTF. Carter remembers what the cop told him over the phone. He repeats it for Anthony. “He said we’re in trouble,” Carter says. “He said he’s gonna keep the scene quiet for us, but then he’ll have to make it known. Once he does that, we’re on our own.”

“What the fuck?” Anthony says, leaning forward. “What is it? How’s it reflecting bad on us?”

Carter shakes his head. He grips the steering wheel tight. “We’ll know soon enough.”

They reach the scene. It’s cordoned off, but there’s no crowd, no one trying to snatch a look. The bodies have been dumped in scrubland. There are four cruisers parked around the area. The uniformed cops all turn to the GCTF as they pull up. Carter gets out first. He leads the way. The others follow.

The cop who called Carter direct comes over to him. “Word’s getting out,” he says. “People are finding out. I could only keep it quiet for so long.”

Carter nods. They make their way through the cordon and toward the bodies.

“Dog-walker found them,” the cop says. “I was closest in the area. They ain’t in uniform and they don’t have ID, but I recognised them both straight away.”

Carter sees the bodies. He knows them both, too. They were put on Rosette Walker’s house. They’re both stripped naked. One has been shot through the head. The other’s throat has been cut. Words have been carved into their bodies, predominantly in their torsos, but also in their stomachs and arms, and up and down their legs. The same pair of acronyms, over and over – DLB, and GCTF.

“Fuck,” Nick breathes at Carter’s shoulder.

Carter stares at the bodies. At the initials carved into them. There isn’t much blood where they’ve been carved. They were already dead when this was done.

“We’re gonna get raked over the coals for this,” Delia says. She’s at Carter’s other shoulder.

Carter nods. He steps back, motions his team to come closer. “They were on Rosette Walker,” he says. “This is no coincidence.” He calls to the cop who called him. “Where’s their car?”

“Where they left it,” the cop says.

“Outside Rosette Walker’s?” Carter says.

The cop shrugs. “If that’s where they were.
