Following his conversation with Big Ben and Sandy, Pete decided to contact his lawyer. He went out into the alley behind the mission and found a secluded spot next to a large metal dumpster. His hands shook as he placed the call on his cell phone. When Mr. Murdock’s secretary put him on hold, Pete prayed the man would be available to speak with him. The next voice he heard was the lawyer’s.

“Mr. Holloway? This is Walter Murdock. I’ve been expecting to hear from you. I understand you’ve got a bit of a problem.”

“I sure do,” Pete replied, grateful for someone in the legal system who was on his side, “and I need your advice on what to do about it.”

“Your wife called me last week and told me everything she knows about your circumstances. Are you aware that there are now two outstanding warrants for your arrest?”

“Yes, I figured as much. I should have taken your advice to stay put when I told you about the first one. Now I’m in over my head. However, there are definite extenuating circumstances that will likely play into my favor. I’d like to give you a statement about what happened so you can start preparing my defense.”

“Yes, I am. I’m hiring you as my defense lawyer.”

“Okay, fine. Second, without divulging your exact location, would you agree that you have knowingly fled the jurisdiction, or jurisdictions plural, where the crimes you are alleged to have committed occurred?”

“Yes, I agree.”

“And have you undertaken, or are you now undertaking, any steps to intentionally conceal yourself in order to avoid arrest or prosecution?”

Pete hesitated before answering. “Um . . . yes.”

“Then it should come as no surprise that you are legally classified as a fugitive from the law, and as such, there is no statute of limitations that applies to you. In other words, Mr. Holloway, there is no benefit whatsoever in remaining at large. Additionally, this places me in a very precarious position as well. As your defense counsel, I must take into account the boundaries of permissible advocacy. Anything as seemingly minor as knowing your location and not reporting it could put me in danger of being charged with harboring or concealing a fugitive, which would constitute a criminal violation on my part. I’m afraid you’ve left me with very few options.”

“I understand that, Mr. Murdock, and I’m terribly sorry to have put you in this position,” Pete apologized, “but will my statement about what happened in
