Kind Words

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

PROVERBS 31:26 ESV

Sometimes we women are teased for having well-developed verbal skills. Of course, usually the strong, silent type of men do the teasing! Stereotypes aside, when God included in the wisdom literature of the Bible a chapter about a woman of virtue, He mentioned her hands (or palms) in seven out of twenty-two verses, and her mouth in only one verse. God says her mouth disperses wisdom and teaches kindness—the same word often translated “loving-kindness” in the Hebrew scriptures.

When kindness characterizes us, we will not only do kind deeds, we will speak kind words and control our tone of voice. We often speak soft, gentle words to a cute little baby, but let him reach the potty-training stage, and what tone comes out of our mouths? (I speak from experience.) Have you conditioned your preteen to respond and obey only when your request reaches a certain decibel? Or perhaps your husband has messed up big time and you are yelling at him when your cell phone goes off. You press the button and sweetly say, “Hello?”

Yes, we can control how we talk. We can unlearn bad habits and practice speaking kind words with a kind voice, but not without the Holy Spirit’s help. Submit your mouth to the Lord every day, asking Him to set a guard over both what you say and the way you say it (Psalm 141:3).
