The Trossachs is often referred to as “Rob Roy Country,” because the Scottish folk hero and outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor lived and died in this area. Dubbed the Robin Hood of Scotland, Rob Roy was born in 1671 at Glengyle at the head of Loch Katrine and has been immortalized through the works of Sir Walter Scott and the 1995 Hollywood blockbuster starring Liam Neeson. He died in 1734 and is buried at Balquhidder Church , 13 miles northwest of Callander off the A84 at the eastern tip of Loch Voil. You can walk through the churchyard where he is buried up to Kirkton Glen, continuing along through grasslands to a little lake. This footpath leads to the next valley, called Glen Dochart, before it links up once again with A84. Alternatively head west along the banks of this loch to the Braes o’ Balquhidder where you’ll find some of the most bucolic countryside walks in the Trossachs.
