Chapter Fifteen
Two weeks into the school year, I got stuck staying after class to redo three science worksheets. Redo isnât even the right word. Mrs. Harper had me copying the answers from the assignments I turned in onto clean sheets. She was being totally unfair, if you asked me. It wasnât my fault she couldnât read my scribble, as she referred to my handwriting. I had thought my parents would stick up for me, but when I called home to tell them I had to stay late and why, Mom thought it was a good lesson for me to learn.
âIâve told you more than once to sit at the kitchen table when you do your homework and not on your bed,â Mom had said. It was nice to know whose side she was on; too bad it wasnât mine.
Without the shifting of butts in chairs and the whispers of the other students, the classroom was depressing. It made me think of a morgue. Not that Iâve been to one personally, but Iâve seen plenty on television and they were just as eerily deserted as Mrs. Harperâs classroom. If it werenât for the haunting music they played on television, Iâd bet theyâd be just as quiet, too. Mrs. Harper sprayed the computer keyboards with yellow cleaner, making the room reek of lemon disinfectant. I wanted to write faster, but she had already informed me that I wouldnât be allowed to leave until she could read my answers without having to decipher them.
Iâd just finished copying the answer to question number eight on the second worksheet when Mrs. Cabernet poked her head into the room.
âI see youâre stuck here, too,â she said to Mrs. Harper when she noticed me. Her nose crinkled in disapproval, like I was the one whoâd made Mrs. Harper stay after school.
âHopefully this will be the last time,â Mrs. Harper said. I pretended not to notice the evil eye she gave me and smiled like I was having the time of my life. She shook her head and told Mrs. Cabernet to come in.
It was hard to concentrate on the worksheet in front of me with them gabbing. I stuck my fingers in my ears and read the question I was working on for the third time as I tried to remember what I had written for an answer.
Okay, Iâll admit this one was hard to read.
âFull moonâs coming,â Mrs. Cabernet said. âIâm thinking this would be a good time to have my class create a chart noting the position of the moon in the sky, how big it is, and what time of night itâs visible. Then Iâll have them do the same thing next month and compare their notes.â
Mrs. Harper tapped a stack of papers against the top of her desk, organizing them into a neat stack. âThatâs a great idea. Those who have access to a camera can take a picture from their driveways to see if it moves in the sky each month or stays in the same place.
