Chapter Nineteen
Me: I have news. How soon can you guys meet?
Kamy: I have news too
Rayna: is this good news?? bad news???
Me: I have to tell you in person.
Kamy: I have to tell you in person
Rayna: i hate you both
â¦
Chris drops me off at Raynaâs house, and I go straight to her room. Rayna is literally mixing drinks on her vanity, and Kamy is sitting in the middle of the floor, hugging a pillow, looking like sheâs going to throw up.
That could mean she has bad news. Is she sick again?
Maybe she should go first. Then my news wonât seem so bad by comparison.
God, thatâs such a selfish thing to think. My friend could be dying, and Iâm worried about being judged because of Benjamin freaking Oliver. Get a grip.
âHey, Jessie,â Kamy says. Even her voice sounds bad.
I sit down next to her and put my arm around her. Tears are coming before this is over, I can sense it. Rayna plops down on Kamyâs other side, a wine spritzer in each hand. She gives one to me, and I take a sip.
Tingly. Tart. Perfection. She could have a side hustle as a barmaid.
âWeâre here,â Rayna says. âTell us whatâs going on so I donât have to guess anymore. All my guesses end with someone dying.â
Kamy gives a weak smile. âThe only thing thatâs dying is my life as I know it.â
I blow out a breath. If she still has a life, thatâs all that matters. Whatever this is, we can help her through it. âWhat happened?â I ask.
âToddâ¦â Kamy starts.
Oh thank god, Iâm not the only one with boy trouble. I should have known this was about boys. They are the root of all evil.
âDo I need to dismember him?â Rayna asks.
âNo! He justâ¦umâ¦he kind ofâ¦proposed to me?â
âHe what?â Rayna and I say at the same time.
Todd? Marriage? Weâre teenagers, for fuckâs sake.
âWhy the hell would he do something like that?â I ask her.
âBecauseâ¦â Kamy starts, then stops to take a deep breath. âI told himâ¦â
I lean into her, as if getting closer will help her say it.
âOh my god,â Rayna yelps. âNo way!â
I look back and forth between them. âNo way what? What did I miss?â
Rayna points an accusing finger at Kamy. âSheâs pregnant!â
âPfft, no she isnât.â I turn to Kamy. âTell her sheâs overreacting.â
Kamy looks at me, her mouth dropped open a little and eyes pleading. She shakes her head. âIâm pregnant.â
My jaw hits the floor. This isnât just boy trouble; itâs the epitome of boy trouble. Stupid sexy boys and their dumb baby-making dicks. Why canât we all be lesbians? Like that dinosaur movie where all of them were born femaleâthey found a way to procreate without sperm, so could we.
âYouâre pregnant,â I say. Even the word feels wrong. âWith Toddâs baby?â
Kamy glares at me. âWho elseâs would it be?â
âIâm sorry,â I say, then rub my palm up and down her back, and she softens. âIâm just trying to wrap my head around this. Donât you guys use protection?â
âOnly condoms,â Kamy says.
