TWO MORE WAYS TO FORGIVE
We tend to think forgiveness is only about forgiving those who have hurt us. But forgiveness does not stop there.
What about your self-inflicted hurts? Are there things you need to forgive yourself for? That question holds a great deal of weight, doesnât it? When we walk under an umbrella of unforgiveness toward ourselves, we are barred from receiving the raindrops of grace that the Lord rains down on us. Sometimes it is far easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves. We live with constant reminders of some of our bad choices. What umbrella of unforgiveness have you been walking under?
You are worthy of forgiveness. It is amazing how many people live for years, even decades, with unforgiveness toward themselves, haunted by wrong decisions, broken relationships, harsh words, stupid actions, and the âI should havesâ of life. Somehow the worst of our mistakes can plague us on a daily basis. Satan will remind us of these as long as we allow him to. But there is nothing that we cannot forgive ourselves for. Nothing. It is never too late with God.
âAnd we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purposeâ (Rom. 8:28). In all things. That includes every mistake we have ever made, no matter the size. Every regret. Regret is a fancy word for placing blame in our own lap. Which things do you blame yourself for? Which regrets haunt you?
Regrets plague the mind and stifle grace. Now, it is important that we take responsibility for our past actions. Accountability and responsibility are useful in creating a right standard for living. But regret, shame, and unforgiveness are evil entities, meant to torture the mind and create the ultimate condemnation within the human heart. Forgive yourself and let go of regrets. Jesus paid the price so that we would no longer have to carry these things.
There is one more question to ask about forgiveness: Do you need to forgive God? I know, this idea may make you a little uncomfortable, but hereâs what I mean. God is perfect in being and power, holy in all His ways, yet He is blamed for a great many wrongdoings. We think, âGod, You could have done . . . but You didnât.â God gets blamed for world struggles, early deaths, sick babies, unresolved conflict, even destructive weather that we call acts of God. Is the Lord really to blame for the earthâs sin and for Satanâs evil works?
What have you blamed God for in your life? Do you hold a grudge against your heavenly Father? If you do, you must repent. God loves us, and it grieves Him when we place blame on Him. âFor as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from usâ (Ps. 103:11â12).
