Seventeen years ago, Undisclosed hospital in Virginia:

Amanda followed her son Justin down the hospital corridor. The air was tinged with the antiseptic smell of strong cleaners. “Jason and the others are in a private wing.” He turned the corner and waited for her to catch up.

“Sorry.” She hustled a bit.

“Don’t be. Remember, the doctors said it was only a matter of time before he wakes up.”

Amanda nodded. She’d been clinging to those words. She wasn’t about to forget them. “The other men?”

“Dixon and Drake from Jacob’s team. You’ve met them, right?”

“I have.” The twins were amazing young men.

“There are a couple others from the team Jason was leading, but they’ll be discharged soon. Fractures, some wounds from the conflict they were caught up in.” Justin didn’t go into what type of conflict they were involved in, and she didn’t ask.

“Jacob’s wife, Victoria, right?” She’d been shocked that Jacob had gotten married. Even more shocked that she hadn’t been told, but it was her son’s life.

“Yeah. She goes by Tori. She’s here with the twins. Her father is usually here, too. They’re good people, Mom. They make sure everyone is getting the care they should.”

Justin pushed the button on the outside of the doors. A voice sounded through the speaker. “May I help you?”

“Justin King with my mother.”

“Stand by, sir. There has been a bit of a disturbance.”

Amanda’s heart thundered in her chest. “A disturbance?” She looked up at her son.

His eyes widened. “I don’t have a clue.”

Five minutes later, the door opened, and an armed guard let them in. Amanda gaped at the man who passed her, his arm clearly broken under the skin. “What happened to him?”

“I think I know.” Justin quickened his pace and made it to the doorway before she did. What she saw was disturbing. “Oh, Mary, Joseph, and the three wise men.” She whispered her words, too shocked to say them any louder.

The room was a disaster, and her son lay strapped to the bed. She'd bet anything her son Jason had broken that man’s arm.

Justin’s voice brought all attention to the doorway. “I think I may have just the person.”

Amanda stepped into the room, her eyes steadfast on her son. Good lord, what had happened? She moved to the bedside. Her sweet child. He’d been through so much. Too much. There was an IV bag on the ground, and Jason’s bandaged arm told the story as plain as daylight. Amanda cupped her son’s face in her hands and kissed his forehead. She shook her head and then searched for the medical authorities in the room. Aggravation at a multitude of scenarios floated to the surface of her normally calm demeanor. She looked at the doctor and delivered a lecture that even the most obstinate two-year-old would understand. “My son is a recovering drug addict. He fought hard to get off prescription drugs and has been clean for years now. He apparently saw the IVs and reacted accordingly. When you wake him up, you make sure he has nothing attached to him.
