Later on that evening, I laid with my big body curled around Maisie's, my face buried in her hair as she slept peacefully in my arms. I don't think I'd ever be able to sleep alone again. Her warmth, her strawberry scent, her little breaths and whimpers, it was the perfect sleep cocktail. Apart from tonight, I couldn't sleep. Mainly because I couldn't stop thinking about proposing to Maisie, I knew exactly how I wanted to do it but I'd need some help from the guys at the station. I made a mental note to chat to them on Monday, I knew they'd have my back. I'd managed to find the very best group of friends. But for now, I willed my mind to shut down so that I could get to sleep.

Just as I felt my body relaxing and was about to drop off, my phone vibrated on my bedside table. Usually I would have just ignored it but something told me that I should look. God if I uncurled from this woman's soft warm body and it turned out to be junk mail then I'd be seriously pissed.

I reached across and snatched up my phone, trying hard not to jostle my sleeping beauty. I swiped open the phone and noticed an email sitting in my inbox from 'JD's Pawn Shop'. My heart immediately began to race, I'd periodically been working my way through all of the pawn shops in the south of the country on the search for Maisie's locket.

A local man had recently been caught mid burglary, it matched all of the other break ins that had happened recently, including Maisie's. We were pretty sure it was the same man, his motive, selling off expensive heirlooms to feed his drug habit. Why he'd gone to such efforts to destroy the place in the process was beyond me.

I opened the email, hoping, wishing. Goddamn praying for some good news after all these months searching. Maisie had no idea I'd been searching for it, the very last thing I needed to do was get her hopes up.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath before opening them and beginning to read,

J.D's Pawn Shop

Dear Mr Richards,

Thank you so much for your email, apologies that it's taken me so long to get back to you, we've been incredibly busy here in the shop.

I also apologise for the late email, but I wanted to just let you know that I think I may have found what you've been looking for. Please find attached a photograph of a silver locket that has recently come into our possession. It was brought into the shop, anonymously. The man refused to give any details.

If you believe this to be the item you have been looking for, please do let me know. I'm willing to hold onto it until you can get here. I know how precious family heirlooms are and I'm so incredibly sorry to hear that the locket had been stolen.

Anyway, let me know.
