Returning home, Gabriella was still in her sprightly mood as she mulled over her conversation with Vito. She visualized the way he looked—his ruffled hair, the tone of his skin, the contours of his face. She memorized the details with artistic precision, looking forward to transferring them onto paper. Spotting the large group of people staring aghast at the flames darting from their apartment, her eyes flew open, instantly snapping her out of her sweet daydream. The muscles in her arms went limp, and her groceries scattered onto the sidewalk. Her legs weighted with dread, she pressed onward. Catching sight of Rosa and Louisa clinging to Santo, she prayed they were unharmed.

“Oh, my God! Is everyone okay?” Gabriella fell to her knees in front of her sisters, scanning them from head to toe.

The elderly woman standing next to them said gravely, “The firemen are on their way.”

Gabriella suddenly remembered the small, wooden box that held the few sentimental items they had from their mother and the tin filled with cash. Jumping up, she ran into the building and thundered up the stairs in a fervent attempt to rescue what little they had left.

Her eyes watered as she squinted through the thickening haze and gasped for air. Frantically, she grabbed anything she could salvage, flinging clothes and linens out the kitchen window into the alley below. Overcome by smoke, she crawled along the floor and searched for her way out, gripping tightly onto the box that held the memories of her mother and the tin that contained the worth of the family’s hard work. She staggered outside and watched from the street in silent horror as the firemen competed with the angry flames, singeing off pieces of Gabriella’s heart.
