A mile down the highway, coming toward Troy and Carla, was a blue 1973 Ford pickup. Inside was Tommy Thibodeaux, a short, wiry man of 75. A cigarette hung from his lips. He had the local Zydeco AM station on the radio, and was rocking out, tapping the wheel with his finger. Next to him sat his lifelong buddy, Sonny Boudreaux, also 75. Sonny was a big guy with a slight paunch. He also had just lit up a smoke.

Sonny sang along in a heavy Cajun accent, to the patois French lyrics of the Zydeco band. To these guys, it was sweet music. To the uninitiated, it sounded like someone skinning a cat alive.

“What dat asshole doin’?” Tommy said. He leaned forward over the wheel and squinted into the distance.

Sonny noticed the oncoming tow truck, too. “Guess he tryin’ to find a lane to use. Only got two to choose from.” This was highly funny to Sonny, and he laughed out loud.

“Dass a tow truck,” Tommy said. “Pullin’ a car. And what the fuck is dat on the roof?”

“Look like some half-ass Mardi Gras float or sumpin’,” Sonny said. “You know, like ya see in New Orleans.”

Tommy grabbed the wheel with both hands. “Well, dat fucker better pick a lane or he gonna lose his decoration, dat’s fo’ sure.”

“Look like he got a motor in dat ting, too,” Sonny said. “Look, it head movin’. Dat’s kinda funny.”

Tommy didn’t comment on that last statement. He was pretty sure there was an even chance he and the Mardi Gras float were going to collide head on.
