Chapter Twenty-Two
The bare branches and the plummeting late October temperatures echoed the empty feeling that had engulfed Mary for the past few days. Since she and David had been courting they had seen each other every day, but Davidâs job at the hospital and Maryâs work and wedding-preparation commitments meant the two had been forced to spend time apart. Now Mary was counting down the hours until she saw him for lunch, and the fact that he had come to mean so much to her in such a short time wasnât lost on the former driver.
She had been so distracted by thoughts of the doctor that she had tidied up the same roll of fabric three times over, as well as handed one customer the wrong pattern to go with her fabric.
âAre you all right?â Flo asked kindly as she took the material from Maryâs hands and placed it back on the shelf.
Mary smiled apologetically. âSorry, Iâve been thinking about David. Heâs meeting me in an hour and I canât wait to see him.â
âAs I live and breathe. Mary Holmes-Fotherington soft on a fella!â Flo chuckled. âWhen you first started here you told me you were too busy for sweethearts.â
âSheâs been out with him almost every night this week,â Alice added, after saying farewell to one of her regular customers. âI think itâs serious.â
Mary rolled her eyes. âAlice, please. We want to keep things quiet, weâre just enjoying each otherâs company.â
âWell, if you want to keep things quiet you want to focus less on mooning over your fella and more on your job,â Dot barked from the counter.
Despite the rebuke, Dot was smiling and Mary couldnât resist smiling back. Dot had only started in the department yesterday and was already making quite a name for herself.
âI donât know whatâs got into me, ladies. I have never felt this way about a man before,â Mary exclaimed.
âI think itâs brilliant, Mary,â Alice grinned. âHonestly, I donât know why youâve been so coy about going out with fellas since you got here but I think you and David are made for each other.â
âHe is ever so charming,â Dot agreed, snapping her sales book shut. âWhen he came round to call for you that day after you saved Mabel, he was ever so polite, asking me and Alice all about ourselves. Youâve landed a goodâun there, make no mistake.â
âI donât think youâve done so badly yourself,â Mary pointed out. âYou and Mr Button make a charming couple.â
Dot sniffed as she turned around and saw a customer loitering by the Sungleam fabrics. âWeâre not talking about me. But before I go, I just stopped by to see if youâre all free for your supper with me and Edwin on Saturday.â
Mary and Alice exchanged looks of surprise.
âWe would love to,â Mary said, recovering first.
âCourse we would,â Alice agreed.
Dotâs beam at the girlsâ acceptance lit up her entire face. âWonderful. And what about you, Flo? Can you get away? Rose and Mabel will be there as well.â
âWouldnât miss it for the world,â Flo confirmed delightedly.
