Melanie

Beep. Beep. Beep.

“Paging Dr. Sanders!”

“Do you think she hit her head?” The sounds, and especially that worried, whispered voice pull me out of the darkness.

My eyes blink open as I glance around myself.

“She’s awake!” That relieved voice is Mason and my head turns slightly toward it. At least that’s something familiar amidst … whatever else is happening around me.

There are bright lights above me. Definitely not the lights from the living room at Mason and Ava’s house. And there’s a machine next to me I dimly realize is connected to my arm.

I’m in a bed. But just what is actually happening … I have no idea.

“Mel? Are you okay?”

“Of course she’s not okay, Mason,” Ava admonishes. “She passed out. Something is clearly wrong. And the doctors are going to find out what it is,” she directs at me.

“Doctors?” I manage to get out and Mason frowns at Ava then turns toward me.

“Yes. You’re at the hospital. We … we came to the house after you said you were there and we found you on the floor. You were mumbling. Something about Alexander?”

And suddenly it all rushes back to me.

He’s gone. He left me.

And with that thought comes all the pain.

“What happened? Why did you pass out like that? Are you sick? The doctor hasn’t been able to find anything in particular.” Mason is rushing on and it gives me a moment to try and gather my thoughts. Because I don’t want to tell him. I don’t want to tell anyone what’s happened. It’s too painful. Too raw.

“Mason, why don’t you go call Arthur back,” Ava says gently but Mason frowns at her again and shakes his head.

“No, it’s fine. Arthur can handle the business stuff without me right now. I want to be here for Melanie.”

“No, go,” I tell him and he turns his gaze on me instead. His look is concerned but he pauses a moment and then finally nods.

“All right. Fine. But I’m only going to be a minute, okay? And I’m right outside the door if you need me.”

I give a sharp nod and he slowly makes his way out, though he looks back at us again as he does, before he closes the door.

Now Ava turns toward me with a gentle but rather expectant look and I know she sent him away to get a moment with me alone. “You can tell me anything, Melanie. Just like always. You know that.”

I nod but stay silent a long moment, uncertain if I really want to tell her what happened. But then the words seem to pour out of their own accord.

“Alexander has been more than just a father figure or a helper while I’ve been in Texas. He started out just giving me a job and a place to stay but he’s become so much more than that. I’m in love with him, Ava and then … he just … left me. Just dumped me and left me there by myself … I thought I meant more to him than that.
