Chapter Eighteen

Martine woke up as the mattress dipped, and someone kissed her cheek. “Morning. I’m going into work. Want breakfast?”

Elliot. What was she doing in her…oh, right. Was it morning? Did they lose a whole day? Not that she minded. She’d lose another day if she could. “What’s today?”

“Monday.”

She rolled on to her stomach and groaned. Elliot rubbed her back. She closed her eyes at the gentle touch and snuggled deeper as the circular movement pulled her into that half-dream state. Nonsensical images and thoughts drifted through her head.

“Are you going back to sleep?”

She sighed. “I will if you keep doing that.”

Elliot chuckled and broke the spell by getting up. “Well, you have another half hour if you change your mind.”

She lay in bed for a few more minutes, trying to recapture that blissful state, but the moment was over. Her whole body sluggish and slow, she sighed, totally spent. She’d explored every inch of Elliot’s body in their sex marathon, always searching, never getting enough. Just in case this was the only time. Without words, they acted on an unspoken agreement to explore and enjoy, deal with reality later. Now reality had come, and she didn’t want to face it. What if this was all they had?

She threw the blankets off, padded into the bathroom, and ran her hands across her face. Elliot’s scent lingered on her fingertips. She should shower, but she wanted breakfast more. She washed her hands instead.

Elliot stood at the counter cracking eggs into a bowl. “I don’t have a lot of time this morning. Scrambled eggs work?”

“Yes.” She poured herself a cup of coffee and stared at the mess of their table. She nudged it with her bare foot and shook her head. “There’s no fixing this.”

Elliot glanced over her shoulder and smiled. “Nope.”

Martine turned a chair around and sat, folding her arms along its back. Like so many times before, she sipped her coffee and watched Elliot cook. A part of her worried that they’d ruined this part of their friendship by sleeping together. But the routine of their morning ritual remained. Relieved by the normalcy, she openly stared at Elliot.

She knew what those hands could do and how those hips moved. She’d been in the circle of those arms and had whispered in that ear all the filthy things she’d wanted to do. Still wanted. Putting her coffee on the floor, she stood and came up behind her. Wrapping her hands around Elliot’s waist, she said, “I can’t stop thinking about yesterday.”

Elliot leaned back and covered her hands. “What part?”

Martine kissed up her neck and toward her ear. “All of the parts. Especially your parts.” She slid her hands inside Elliot’s shirt and along her stomach. Elliot turned and kissed her until the smell of burning eggs overpowered her.

“Shit.” Elliot pulled away and took the pan off the burner. Glancing at her watch, she said, “Well, that’s it for breakfast.”

“Sorry.” Not that Martine wanted to take back kissing her, but she had distracted her.
