Andi was waiting Sunday morning for Elizabeth and Paige to arrive. They were on their way to pick her up for a birthday lunch. She’d bought a new blouse, a red tunic, to reward herself for losing five pounds. It was flattering and she felt good in it. When she was a little girl her mom always surprised her with a new outfit for her birthday, and when she told Kevin, he continued the tradition, taking her out shopping so she could pick out something she liked.

Andi didn’t need a new blouse. She had a closet full of clothes, but they reminded her of a person she wasn’t anymore.

She didn’t know who she was, but she wasn’t Kevin’s wife anymore. And she wasn’t Kevin’s widow. She was becoming someone else, both exciting and terrifying.

The doorbell rang. Andi grabbed her purse, and a light wrap, not sure if it would be needed, and opened the door.

Wolf stood there with an enormous bunch of red roses. “Happy birthday.”

Her lips parted, shocked. “You remembered.”

“I did, yesterday, but it was too late to get anyone to deliver flowers to you on a Sunday.”

“You kept my address?” she asked, remembering when he’d sent the sympathy card.

“No. I asked Margot. She gave it to me.”

The realization that he and Margot were still in touch dimmed some of her happiness. “Thank you. That’s very kind of you.”

“Heading out?” he asked.

She nodded. “Friends are taking me to lunch.”

“Glad I caught you, then.”

She glanced past him, looking for his car. “How did you get here?”

“Motorcycle.” As if sensing her confusion, he gestured behind him. “The bike is noisy so I left it on the street. You have a very long driveway, by the way.”

“Rather like yours up in Blue Jay.”

He smiled, gray eyes glinting. His beard was shorter, trimmed to match his hair, and he looked good. Civilized. Sexy. “The flowers will need water. Sorry.”

“They traveled by bike, too?”

“Tucked them inside my jacket.”

She couldn’t imagine how they looked so good, considering they’d been zipped inside his black leather jacket. But then, she wouldn’t have minded being tucked inside his jacket. Andi set her purse and wrap on the hall table. “Should I take them?”

“Please.” He handed the roses to her, and then leaned down, kissed her cheek. “Happy birthday, Andi.”

His lips were cool against her hot cheek. He smelled like cedar and spice and her stomach clenched, her throat aching with emotion. “Thank you, Wolf.”

“I’m glad your friends are taking you out.”

His voice was so deep it sent shivers through her. “Me, too.”

“You look beautiful. I like you in red.” And then he was walking away, all long legs, dark denim, and black leather.

She watched him go, air bottled in her lungs. He was without a doubt the most fascinating, impossible man she’d ever met.

Andi had headed to the kitchen to put the roses in a vase when her doorbell rang for a second time. She went to the door, greeted Paige and Elizabeth with hugs, and thanks, as they’d also brought her flowers.
