When my sister died, I grieved and moved on, allowing myself a week or two of mourning. After all, she was in heaven. So, I just kept going. When I had a traumatic romantic heartbreak, I didn’t stop to suffer. Again, I just pushed it all down inside and kept going. Then my brother died. Once again, I didn’t stop to deal with the pain. I just kept speaking and traveling and being a leader. And the suicidal level of depression just kept gnawing at me as I tried to follow my ministry goals.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m kind of proud that I didn’t give up. Sometimes work and distraction and a little escapism are good things. The problem is, when you bury your grief and keep working toward your career goals without working on your feelings, grief will eventually bury you. The trauma just continued to pile up on me, the result of an avalanche of emotions that hadn’t really been addressed.
