BENJI

Gabe was right—I hadn’t thought this plan through.

At all.

Now I hovered outside the kitchen, a patch of sweat beading on my lower back, as I listened to the familiar voices of my parents. They were having a normal day, blissfully unaware of the bomb I was about to drop.

I wasn’t worried about them liking Everly—she was amazing, and would get along fine with them. Hell, they’d probably like her more than me eventually. The issue was the whole wedding thing. They hated lying, and the fact I’d deceived the Lloyds wasn’t going to sit well with them.

So don’t tell them it’s fake.

I could let my parents believe I’d gotten married in Vegas. Then they wouldn’t know I’d lied to the Lloyds. Sure, they might be a tad bit disappointed in me not having a wedding and looping them into my relationship from the get-go, but they wouldn’t be that mad about it, right?

Not as mad as they’d be about me lying to potential business partners.

Taking a deep breath, I charged into the kitchen riding this sudden surge of confidence.

“Benji! So good to see you!” My mom rushed over, wrapping her arms around me in a tight hug. Her familiar scent tickled my nose, shooting a sharp pang of guilt through me, and my chest squeezed hard and tight.

I hated lying to my parents. But I also wanted to prove to them I could make a deal. A real bona fide business deal, all on my own. And the only way to make that happen was to keep up the marriage ruse.

“Hey, Mom.” I pressed a light kiss to the top of her blonde head.

My dad dropped his sandwich onto a plate and affectionately slapped my shoulder. “Glad you’re home, kid. I thought you said you were bringing someone. Where is she?”

I stepped back from my mom, averting my eyes. “I took her upstairs, gave her a quick tour. She’ll be down soon. Listen—” My voice wobbled, a lump forming in my throat.

Both my parents paused, their full attention turned to me.

“What is it, Benji? Are you okay?” My mom’s eyebrows rose, tiny worry lines etched between her brows.

I shook my head, ran a hand through my hair. “Yeah, I’m good. Everything’s great, actually. I think you’re going to really like the Lloyds. Mr. Lloyd sent over a term sheet—Dad, I forwarded it to you—and the numbers look good.”

“I’ll take a look, son. We can run it by the attorney as well. The Lloyds will be here tomorrow, right? We have the guesthouse ready for them.”

“Yes, I believe so. They’re planning on staying a day or two. I figured I’d give them a tour of the vineyard and the winery on day one. We could have a working lunch, then a nice private dinner in the tasting room. Then the next day we’d meet with Julian and start working on the wine notes.”

“Excellent plan. I have to say, I’m impressed with this deal, Benji. I always hoped you’d want to run the winery and this is a good first step in the right direction.
