Chapter 6

Elliott

“Hey man, how’s it going?”

One of my best friends, Coby Weston, called before I texted Kaitlyn to see how she was doing today. Our flight back was non-eventful as she’d fallen asleep as soon as we took off, her head resting against my shoulder, her hands clasped in her lap. She wore the sweetest expression on her face. I hardly took my eyes off her the entire flight. She didn’t wake when I lifted her in my arms, tucked her against my chest like precious cargo, and exited the plane. She only stirred when I buckled her into the car.

When we reached the hotel, I guided her back to her room, kissed her goodnight, and waited until I heard the deadbolt lock into place before I took the elevator to my penthouse suite.

I kicked myself for not simply bringing her to my room. I could have spent the night with her in my arms. But I didn’t want to push. I didn’t want to do anything that would drive her away any sooner than necessary. She’s only in the city for a few more days. I can’t afford to screw this up.

“Hey, Coby. How’s the team doing?” Coby owns a professional baseball team. I think he did it to piss off his father, who’d had a shot at the pros but fucked himself out of a spot by getting addicted to drugs and alcohol. It only made him a miserable son of a bitch, and he took his failings out on his boys.

They both got even by getting out of dodge and making something of themselves. After Coby sold the gaming app he built, making him a billionaire a few times over, he had more than enough money to do what he wanted. And if pissing off his old man made him happy, then more power to him.

“They’re doing okay. Sitting in third place in our division right now. We’re playing in New York next month. Want tickets? I can meet you there.”

“Absolutely. So what’s up? You could have just emailed me the tickets.”

“Have you heard from Teddy?”

“Not recently, why?” Teddy is another member of the Sutherland Group, the band of kids I hung out with throughout grade school and high school. Some of us went to different colleges after that, but we stayed closer than most brothers. Always ready to drop everything and be there for one another when necessary.

“I’ve heard a rumor that Pat wants to sell the bar.”

I straighten in my desk chair. “What? Why?”

“I don’t know. That’s why I’m trying to connect with Teddy.”

We grew up in the back of that bar. Pat Sutherland provided a bunch of trouble-making gangly kids a safe place to hang out, shoot pool, play arcade games, listen to music, and talk. That was after we cleaned up the graffiti on his building. The markings we’d put there. The other business owners we harassed weren’t as accommodating or forgiving. Our parents never paid attention often enough to give a shit. Pat was the only one who did.
