MALICIOUSNESS. SPITE. ILL WILL. My sister’s way of loving me. Having to say good-bye, having to look on her pallid face, cheeks splotched, tears sprouting out of her eyes, her blond hair in piggish little ringlets, oh, how I hated her at that moment! Recoiled from her wet kiss.

Even now, I hate her. A jail can be one’s own family, one’s chief jailer a sister whose idea of love is tyranny, hysteria, threats.

I have sometimes wondered if her madness isn’t feigned. It works, madness, terrifying my parents, making them exert control over me.

But if those threats prove real? If she does go mad? Destroys herself? Blames me?

So be it.

The coldness I feel, writing this. The absence of any affection. The bitterness. If the choice is her sanity or mine, if my loyalty is to be to my family or to God, I make my decision.

I am on my way to France. Gone.
