CHAPTER 33
White let himself into his house and carried the bag through to the kitchen. He placed the holdall on the table, then lowered the blinds and switched on the lights. He sat down and unzipped the holdall. There were a number of bubble-wrapped packages inside and he took them from the bag and laid them on the table. Four were clearly the silencers, cylinders about ten inches long. He picked up one of the larger packages and ripped away the bubble wrap. Underneath was an oiled cloth. He peeled away the cloth to reveal the gun. It was a Glock, finished in matte black. It looked new, there were no scratches or blemishes. White had never fired a gun in his life, and knew next to nothing about how to use one. He had read somewhere that Glocks didnât have safeties, and that seemed to be the case, there was no switch to be flicked to get the gun ready to fire. There was a small oblong button set into the butt behind the trigger guard and when he pressed it, the magazine ejected out of the bottom and clattered onto the table. White put down the gun and picked up the magazine. It was fully loaded. He took out the bullets one by one and lined them up on the table. There were fifteen.
White realised he needed a crash course in gun handling so he put down the magazine and spent ten minutes watching YouTube videos on his phone. It seemed simple enough. The Glock didnât need a manual safety switch because it had a special three-part trigger which could not be pulled accidentally and which wouldnât fire if the weapon was dropped. Loading was just a matter of slotting in the magazine and pulling back the slide to push the first bullet into the chamber. All you had to do then was point the gun at the target and pull the trigger. White watched several videos of Glocks being fired and realised that he was going to have to get some practice. He needed to know how it felt when the gun went off, and how it sounded. He had the silencers but he wasnât sure how good a job they would do in cutting down the noise so he couldnât risk firing one in the house or the garden.
He unwrapped the three other guns. Two had the Glock logo on the barrel, along with the number 19 and the word AUSTRIA. Next to AUSTRIA was 9x19. White frowned at the numbers then realised that it meant the type of ammunition the gun used. The other two guns were slightly bigger and had seventeen bullets in their magazines.
Finally he unwrapped the four silencers. They were black, almost two inches in diameter with a screw thread at one end to attach them to the barrels. White screwed one into the barrel of one of the Glock 19s. It made the gun a lot heavier and as he aimed at the clock on the wall his hand began to tremble.
