HE FORGOT to turn his phone back on before he left for work in the morning, but he was still too pissed off to care.
Drinking was one thing. Chance was no teetotaler; he and Tucker had been drunk together plenty of times, and heâd even go so far as to say really, really smashed once or twice. It wasnât the alcohol that was bothering him.
They just didnât talk to each other like that.
It was an unspoken rule with them. If they were pissed at each other? Fine. Just donât say shit that couldnât be taken back. Theyâd had some fights in their time, had hurled insults and profanities at each other, and in the end it just resulted in bruised egos. Theyâd stopped fighting dirty when theyâd gotten back together, and Chance felt they were better for it.
Apparently Tucker had forgotten.
Work kicked his ass, as usual, and Chance was glad. Kept him from dwelling on his anger. A car fire before dinner took longer to extinguish than normal and he hadnât realized he was barking orders at his crew until Jim ventured into his office after they got back to the station.
Chance was glaring at a newsletter from headquarters in the office he shared with the two other captains on B and C shifts when Jim knocked.
He glanced up and lifted an eyebrow. Jim was a good paramedic and a partner he could trust. âWhatâs up?â
âYou were kind of a dick on that last call.â Jim wasnât one for mincing words, a quality Chance usually appreciated.
He blinked. âYeah?â
âYeah. Kind of a dick all day, really. You got something on your mind?â
âYou ainât supposed to talk to your captain like that,â he said, with an attempt at humor.
âYou say âainâtâ a lot these days. And you might be my captain, but I still have to work with you. Missing the boy?â Jim leaned against the doorframe as if he had all the time in the world to discuss Chanceâs asshole behavior.
Chance sighed. He tried not to pick up Tuckerâs horrid grammar, but sometimes it slipped in under the radar. âNo. I mean. Yeah, but. Things arenât so great right now.â
ââCause heâs gone, or what?â
âI guess. We got into it last night on the phone.â He stopped there, unwilling to reveal the details.
Jim nodded slowly. âYeah, I get it. Sorry, man.â He pushed off from the doorjamb and ambled away, presumably to help the other engineâs crew with dinner.
Chance watched him go. Jimâs willingness to leave a man be was one of the things Chance liked best about him and made him so easy to work with. He briefly thought of Robert Diaz, a firefighter and friend on B shift. Robert was a good guy, but too nosy for his own good. He would have needled at Chance until he spilled the whole story, and then Chance would have been irritated at the intrusion.
Being alone until his mood improved was the better option for everyone.
