When Surprises Foil Careful Plans

Shebaliza sat on the bed, trying to regain control of herself. She breathed heavily. “What happened?” Kisju urged. “What went wrong?”

“And how do you know it went wrong,” she hissed, “What did you already know, chatting to them last night?!”

“I only know it went wrong, because they’re cheering in the meeting hall and it’s not for you, is it?”

“No, it isn’t,” she said desponded. “This is the first time anything in our plan goes wrong and it’s your fault.”

“My fault?” Kisju didn’t understand what she meant.

“You HAD to marry her. She ran away and you followed. Because you followed her, she met HIM. Together they found the way to HERE. Had you left her alone, he would be wondering through the mountains somewhere.”

“Do you mean to say that Pjotor is the reason you failed?”

“Yes!” she snapped. “Yes! Yesterday everything went perfect! I presented my case, told them I’m an old one and a reader. I proved my training, being the best, three years in a row! I knew I had the supporters, enough to ensure I would be a candidate! Today I was first, FIRST!” she yelled, “You know what that means! They thought I had the best chance! I go up and I tell them. I tell them I can unite the middle and the east people. I tell them I can make them live outside the mountains. And they love it! They were ALL hanging on my lips! They loved it and I knew everything came together as I wanted, as we wanted! The questions all went great, even the tougher ones! I had them eating out of the palm of my hand.” She started to cry. Kisju wanted to comfort her, but she pushed him away. With her sleeve she wiped the tears from her face and her eyes became hard again. “Then HE stands up and starts asking questions on how I intended to achieve those goals. So I give him the story we talked about, the story that they all believed so far. But he doesn’t buy it, he asks more and more questions. He makes the whole plan look ridiculous. I knew I had to do something, so I asked if he was applying for the job of successor himself. People laughed, I knew they were on my side again. He didn’t get flustered or anything, cool as a cucumber he stayed. Just asked more questions which I didn’t answer. I pretended to be bored by his probing. It was a matter of minutes and he would have been stopped! Then the old woman walks in. She talks to the council and they stop the questioning. The people are asked to leave the meeting hall, the candidates had to stay behind. They tell me there is a new development and they will have a private discussion. We’re brought to the dining room, we’re all puzzled. I kept wondering if the old woman had found out about her, but she was with us as well.
