T he good part about letting Ryan and my father tag along was that I didn’t have to drive. I was too irritated anyway. I had Ryan hop into the driver’s seat; he’d finally gotten his driver’s license a few months ago. He was never interested in getting one, not like most teens are, but my father convinced him that it was in his best interest. I was sure he had told Ryan he couldn’t be a spy if he didn’t know how to drive.

Traffic was bogged down that day, and I wondered if Salazar and Pittman had reached Sutro Tower yet. They had about a twenty-minute head start on me. I tried contacting them again, but neither answered their phone. I finally called Kang.

“Have Pittman and Salazar arrived yet?”

“Not yet. All is quiet. Where are you?”

“Stuck in traffic. It’s awful today. Has anyone over there heard from them?”

“Not that I’m aware of, but everyone here is siloed. ATF is grouped together in one corner, and HSI sticks to their corner. The FBI agents are the only ones walking around trying to maintain some sort of team effort.”

“Figures. Try and find out if anyone has heard from them. They might have called, saying they were running late. Can you imagine the Fire Catcher arriving first?”

“The tactical team will just take him down. That’s the one and only objective. Pittman, Salazar, and you are nothing more than bait, that’s it. It really doesn’t even matter if you’re here. I already informed the tactical team that you were coming on your own. They didn’t care. Honestly, Abby, if it wasn’t for appearance’s sake, I would tell you not to come. But our bosses will want to make sure we played a pivotal role today.”

“This is so dumb,” I said. “I hate working on these task forces.”

“Well, if all goes well, we’ll put this to bed today.”

“I have a question for you. Can you talk freely?”

“Give me a couple of seconds.”

A rustling noise came from Kang’s end before he came back on the line.

“Okay, I have some privacy.”

“Do you think it’s strange that the Fire Catcher wants this meeting?”

“A little, but I chalked it up to his ego and the fact that he’s holding the detonator for other bombs. He thinks he’s untouchable, but he’s in for a rude awakening.”

“And that’s my point. You and I have always maintained that the photographs are driving his actions. Whether it’s for the money or the fame isn’t important now. Agree?”

“Agree.”

“So why risk that with a meeting with us? If he had demands, he could have given them to us over the phone. A dummy can’t pull off what he has, and he’d have to be a dummy not to expect us to apprehend him at this meeting, right?”

“I see where you’re going with this. He’s got a different agenda for this meeting.”

“He does,” I said. “Everyone was so eager to make the meeting happen, we ignored the obvious.”

“Which is that he would never allow himself to be taken into custody.
