The God Who Runs

As the lost son heads for home, he has to be thinking about what his father’s reaction to him will be. Will he get the door slammed in his face? Will he have to endure an almighty chewing-out and then get the door slammed in his face? Will he be given the servant’s job he is planning to beg for—but only at the cost of constant reminders of how he forfeited his status in the family?

The young man doesn’t know how his father will respond. He knows he has blown it big time and humiliated his dad in the worst possible way. He must be preparing for rejection.

But look what happened next in Jesus’s story:

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.58
