Chapter 13 - Jackson

“So…the massage…did you enjoy it?” I ask Claire as we get dressed.

She giggles, eagerly nodding. “Definitely, you could have a new career there, you know. If you ever get bored of firefighting, that is.”

I throw a cushion in her direction as she pulls on her jeans, making her fall onto the sofa.

“Hey, keep that up, mister, and you won’t have a happy ending!”

We both burst out laughing as there’s a knock at the front door.

“Geez...bet that’s another pervert. Can’t they read?”

“Claire. Relax. Let me go answer and put them straight. Maybe I can find out who is behind this.” I quickly pull my t-shirt over my head as I notice Claire watching me, a glint in her eye.

“Or…you could offer them your services, Jackson.”

“Oh, you are so dead when I come back here,” I tell her as I throw another cushion toward her.

Composing myself before answering the door, I consider giving whoever is standing outside a smack in the jaw. I open the door quickly but am taken aback by the uniformed officer in front of me.

“Well, well, well. If it's not the one and only Jackson Hamilton. You were the last person I’d expect to see at a place like this. Well, at least you are dressed!”

“Ah... you’re actually the man I wanted to see. Whoa... what do you mean ‘a place like this’?”

“I’ll be the one asking the questions, Jackson. I need to speak to the owner of this… er… establishment.” The deputy checks his notebook. “I need to speak to a Miss Claire Fletcher. May I come in?”

“Stains, stop being so fucking formal. Claire is inside. Yes, come in. What’s this all about, anyway?”

I had to stop myself from laughing at Stains trying to pull off his macho cop image in front of me. He forgets I went to school with him. I wonder if he also forgets how he got his nickname, Stains. Stains’ real name, the name only his mother still calls him by, is actually James. After his mom’s favorite singer, James Brown.

And James is what we used to call him too, until the dare. We dared each other to go into the abandoned house on our block that belonged to Old Man Peters. The old man had died in that house, and it was weeks before anyone realized. Apparently, you could taste the smell coming from his home from anywhere on the block. The house stood empty for years, falling further into disrepair with every passing season. The usual rumors spread that it was haunted. That Peters was a devil worshipper. All that sort of crap.

No one had the balls to go into the haunted house until a new girl moved onto our block. Emily. Sweet Emily Greer. Both James and I wanted to impress her so much that we dared each other to go inside. The dare was to go to the bedroom, where supposedly, Old Man Peters had been found dead. I still remember being shit scared, but there was no way James was going to show me up in front of Emily.
