for you to know
How would you describe your body? Tall, short, compact, curvy, chunky, athletic, skinny, big butt, small boobs, small waist? There are probably parts of your body that you take pride in, and some parts you donât like as much. Body image is what you see when you look in the mirror and how you feel about your body.
We have already talked about skin color and hair as part of our body image. Body type is another part of how we see ourselves. About four out of five teen girls have a concern with their body type. Comparing our bodies to others can cause dissatisfaction. The media is a significant factor in body image dissatisfaction. The majority of actresses, models, musicians, and beauty influencers are all overwhelmingly thin and White. These images convey at a subconscious level that you have to be thin to be pretty, successful, rich, or powerful.
Body shaming also contributes to body image dissatisfaction. Body shaming is when others make negative comments about someoneâs body. Think about these comments: âThose jeans donât look good on big girls.â âWhy is she going out for cheerleading?â Body shaming can lead to poor mental and physical health, such as low self-esteem, eating disorders, and avoidance of physical activity.
Not all Black girls experience body image problems. In general, Black girls are more comfortable with their bodies and do not obsess about weight as much as White girls do. Overweight Black teens are also less likely to say that they are overweight than average weight White teens. Although body image dissatisfaction may be lower for Black teensâwho may be more concerned about skin color and hairâit still remains.
If you are in a predominantly White space, your body type may be different from your peersâ. Black girls tend to have a heavier body weight than White girls. If you are overweight, you are more likely to be stigmatized by White than Black peers. Also, you may be considered less attractive.
Weight is not the only factor in body image dissatisfaction. The shape of your body and features such as hips and breasts, the size of your feet, or even your nose may influence how you feel about your body.
