Allison was an intelligent woman, just like Elvira, also made a life for herself in New York. Allison worked as a physician’s assistant in the same office as Elvira. She did well for herself and lived in an upscale home just outside of Queens. Allison commuted from Great Neck, an area that was known to people who were financially well-off. Great Neck was a quiet town. It was never too busy or too slow. It had just the right amount of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. At the same time, it still felt like an escape.

Allison was messy and unorganized. There were papers sprawled out all over her home. Clothes laid all over the floor, Allison didn’t have a clue whether they were clean or dirty. Elvira and Allison sat at a table together. Like the rest of Allison’s home, the table was messy. The two of them were filling out Elvira’s applications for college. Elvira asked for Allison’s help because she already went through the process. Allison combed through the applications to see which schools Elvira was going to apply to.

“Are all these applications from schools in the city area?” Allison asked.

Elvira shrugged her shoulders. “I’m pretty sure they are. Michael got them all for me. He went to each school personally. He didn’t know which one I would prefer.”

Allison continued to comb through the applications. She pulled out the application for NYU. “NYU is by far the best school here,” Allison said confidently. “I’m not so sure about the others. Did you ever consider broadening your horizons?”

Elvira gave Allison a confused look. She had trouble believing what Allison was saying. “You mean schools outside of New York?”

Allison nodded. Elvira was angry that Allison had even brought up the idea. She worked hard to build a life here. She finally found some stability and a man who completely adores her. Elvira didn’t understand why Allison would want her to throw that all away.

“Don’t give me that look,” Allison said. “I know what you’re thinking. Humor me though, what happens if you don’t get into NYU? You want to go to the best school, don’t you? You’re a smart woman. Going to a city school is going to be a waste of a great mind.”

As much as Elvira didn’t want to hear it, Allison was right. Elvira wanted to attend the best school possible. She had been given another chance at life, and now was her time to seize the opportunity.

“I guess I could apply to a few schools outside of New York incase. I don’t know what I’m going to tell Michael though.”

Allison sighed. “Elvira, I know you love him. From what you told me, Michael seems like a great guy. That means he’ll only want the best for you. Besides, this is all a backup plan. Don’t say anything for now, wait and see if NYU accepts you first.”

Elvira innocently agreed. She didn’t think much of the decision at the time. There was no harm in applying.
