I start to type yes in response, but then delete it. I was right. Not a date. Just two “lucky” friends hanging out. Exactly what I was hoping for. So why don’t I feel happy about this?

“Come on, everybody,” Mary cuts in, walking over with her eyes still glued to her phone. “Enough chitchat. The car is here. It’s time to board.”

After a flight so smooth that Mary legitimately tried to poach the pilot to come work for her own private plane, we land in Paris on Saturday morning to find two Range Rovers with tinted windows waiting fo us outside the plane. The luxe cars swiftly take us straight from the airport to Mary’s place, which…

According to the call sheet, Mary’s “place” is supposed to be an apartment. Obviously, I went into this experience knowing it wouldn’t be just any apartment. It would be Mary Mashad’s apartment. Even Lou warned me that her place is “wild,” but, at the end of the day, an apartment is an apartment. It can only be so nice, right?

Wrong.

Mary’s apartment is not “just an apartment.” It’s a ten-bedroom penthouse on Avenue George V, which Mary wasted no time telling me is the most prestigious street in Paris. With its grand winding staircase in the foyer, claw-foot bathtubs in every restroom, and delicate crystal chandeliers dangling from all the intricately painted high ceilings, it looks like a piece of history. Like somewhere Marie Antoinette would have hosted a dinner party, which quickly makes sense when I place my backpack on top of a dresser that Mary’s housekeeper tells me was purchased directly from the Palace of Versailles.

“Okay,” Mary begins as we all sit for brunch around her large antique mahogany dining table. “We must discuss safety. I have spoken to our security team and, as always, Melody, Axle, and I will have two security guards with each of us upon leaving the premises. I’ve already spoken to the door attendant, and they’ve ensured there are also going to be four armed security guards protecting the penthouse whenever we are inside, in addition to the two who are here at all hours. Now, Josie. The rest of the crew has grown accustomed to this, so they know the drill. But this will be your first time with security.”

“Wait, I need security?” I ask, dipping my buttered bread into the dark orange yoke of the soft-boiled egg Mary’s Parisian chef prepared to perfection. “Is that really necessary? Nobody even knows who I am.”

“It is imperative,” Mary says. “Not just for your own safety, but for ours. There have been two assassination attempts on me. Melody has thousands of stalkers, one of whom got so close to her during a trip to Miami three years ago that he chopped off a lock of her hair.”

“Despicable,” Axle says, shaking his head vigorously. “I hate that pervert with every fiber of my soul.”

“It’s okay, Axy,” Melody says, giving Axle a reassuring kiss on the head.
