Chapter Thirty-Four

Saturday rolled around, and I hadn’t made any further headway in my investigation. I never thought I’d be looking forward to attending an archery competition, but at the moment, it was my best bet. Even though I knew the odds were against me, I tried to remain optimistic.

I picked up a tagalong for the day. While I was on the phone with Kang, Ryan heard me talking about the competition. He begged me to take him. After an hour of him asking me repeatedly if he could come, I relented.

The only archery contest I’d ever seen had been during the Olympics, which I imagined would be similar to what we’d be watching that day. Secretly, I hoped for something more like The Hunger Games—a Katniss-like character running around shooting stuff. That would be cool.

Kang insisted on driving. He swung by the house at 10 a.m. to pick up Ryan and me. Lucy was fine to hang with Po Po so she could watch more braid tutorials.

Confrere Preparatory Academy was located in Mill Valley, about a forty-five-minute drive. Along the way, we crossed over the Golden Gate Bridge. I won’t lie—I scanned the pedestrians and bikers on the bridge in hopes of picking out the GGB Killer. I had no idea what he looked like, but, you know, I looked anyway.

The school was situated in the hills, accessible by a winding two-lane road. Rolling green lawns and Tudor architecture gave me my first impression of the school. I had no idea a school like that existed in Mill Valley. As we drove through the campus grounds, I could smell the wealth. Is Sei loaded?

We followed handmade signage along a road that directed vehicles to a parking lot next to an athletic field. Family after family swarmed from minivans and SUVs and made their way en masse to a field surrounded by a large oval track. Students dressed in the school’s uniform, a polo shirt and pants or a skirt, passed out a schedule of the day’s events at the base of the bleachers. We scaled the stadium stairs and found seating.

Archery targets were set up around the field. That competition had already started. We had a nice view, but that’s not where my eyes were focused. Kang and I were both eyeballing the crowd for Sei.

The article had mentioned 3D archery, and that event was scheduled to start in fifteen minutes. I scanned the field but didn’t see any 3D targets.

“Are we in the right place?” I asked Kang.

“This is the right school.”

“Yeah, I know that, but is the 3D archery event taking place on the field? I don’t see any 3D targets.” I turned the schedule over. The back had a map of the school.

“We’re in the wrong place,” I said. “The 3D event is taking place in the woods. It’s over there.” I pointed to the trees beyond the field.

“Aww, we’re leaving?” Ryan asked. “I wanted to see them hit the targets.”

“Trust me, the 3D-target competition will be more interesting,” I said.
