Two hours later, I’m somewhere I probably shouldn’t be. But right now, I really want to see her smile. Or even her scowl. Her scowl is damn adorable.

She didn’t invite me over. I haven’t called her or texted since the weekend. She said this should be a weekend-only thing. I’m not crazy about that rule. But, we’re casual. She calls us enemies with benefits. I don’t want to be her enemy but I do love the benefits.

“Dean?” she says through the door.

“Yeah, it’s me.” Her brown eyes are alight with curiosity when she opens the door. She smiles when she sees the roses. That right there, that’s why I came and what I needed.

“What’s this?”

I pass her the bouquet of plum-colored roses. “Just a little something for you.”

“They’re beautiful.”

No, you are. Even with damp hair and dressed in a simple bathrobe, Tabitha is gorgeous.

“I know I’m being very presumptuous showing up on your doorstep but I wondered if you’d be interested in sharing these shrimp tacos with me.”

Her eyes flash and her sweet, rosy lips twitch into a bigger smile. “I could eat. Come in.”

I follow her inside her little apartment, liking the coziness and warmth of it. I didn’t want to leave her Monday morning. Carrying the food over to the kitchen counter, I open up the containers while she finds a vase for the roses.

When I look up, she’s staring at me with narrowed eyes. My spitfire. “Is this a booty call, Mr. Culver?”

“Of course not. I simply didn’t want to eat these alone. But, I am wondering if you’re wearing anything under that bathrobe.”

“Don’t expect to find out just because you brought flowers.” I chuckle at her sass. She lifts my dark mood so easily. That’s another reason I came here.

We fill our plates and she suggests we sit on the sofa. The purple shell I left on top of a box of muffins is sitting on the coffee table. “I’ll be taking this with me when I leave but I promise you’ll get it back.”

“Did you find the magic necklace lady at the beach again?”

“No, she’s not been there in decades.”

Tabitha seems to puzzle over that as we eat quietly. While we do, I work up my nerve to ask the question that’s been burning in my mind for a while now. But she beats me to the punch, asking a question of her own first. “Are you alright, Dean? Did something happen tonight? Has there been a decision about layoffs?”

Shit. “Uh no. Nothing like that.” Hello, Guilty Conscience.

“But there’s something bothering you, isn’t there?”

“I suppose. May I ask why you hate my family?”

She gulps down her bite, looking uncomfortable. “I shouldn’t have said it that way. I told you I was wrong to group all of you together.”

“Okay, why do you hate my father then? It’s him you hate, isn’t it?”

“Dean, he’s your father. I don’t want to say unkind things about him if it will cause you distress-”

“There is nothing you could say about him that would cause me distress.
