The wire I’m wearing is uncomfortable and feels super bulky even though I know it isn’t. Plus, the closer we get to the gym where I practice, the more I’m starting to sweat.

That can’t be good.

I reach to turn up the air conditioner in my car and then glance in the rear-view mirror. Jett is following me in his truck but will park down the street from the gym so nobody sees us together.

And even though I know he’ll be able to hear everything I say and do through the wire, I still wish he was going to be by my side when I go to confront this asshole.

I don’t mind doing the fighting, but I like having someone in my corner.

“Will this thing still stick to me if I start to sweat?” I ask, trying and failing to sound nonchalant. “I mean, hypothetically speaking…”

I can hear his laughter through the radio that’s sitting in my passenger seat and I can see him grinning in my mirror. “That adhesive is industrial strength, beautiful. You can feel free to sweat as much as you want to.”

I’m not sure if I feel better or worse about having industrial strength adhesive on my body, but at least I can be relatively certain the wire won’t randomly fall off while I’m in Billy’s office.

“Okay,” he says through the radio as we approach the gym. “I’m going to park back here. If things start to go really wrong, just get the hell out of there. Or, in the worst-case scenario, just say my name and I’ll be there in thirty seconds.”

I take a deep breath and nod even though he can’t see me anymore as I pull into the parking lot of the gym. “Okay,” I reply. “I think I’ll be fine but… maybe be ready for anything. Just in case.”

“One hundred percent,” he answers. “I’ll be here listening to everything that goes down.”

I turn off the ignition and take a second to calm my nerves. I feel like I’m about to step into the ring with a hell of a fighter—and in some ways, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I hope it won’t turn physical but I’m not going to rule it out. Not after what Billy has already done to throw me under the bus.

Stepping inside the gym where I’ve spent the last half of my life doesn’t feel right. This place has been my home for so long but now I feel like an outsider after just a few days of being gone.

I’m keeping my eyes fixed straight ahead even though I can feel everyone in the place turning to look at me. I can’t hear their whispers but I know it’s happening.

Whatever.

I can’t focus on anyone else right now. Billy is my target today. My opponent. And just like I would be in the ring, I’m going to be laser focused on him while I tune out everything around me.

“I’m in,” I mumble, just barely moving my lips.
