Chapter Nineteen

Luke

Slowly, I realized the sounds coming from the next cell weren’t just aching sounds of pain, but had words involved too. I strained my ears to pay attention, and in spite of everything, started to smile. It hurt like hell, especially where my lip was swollen and split, but I couldn’t help it.

Jesse was in the next cell over, slowly making lyrics out of a tune of pain. I couldn’t quite make them out exactly, but just knowing he was there, and that he was well enough to be turning his pain into music, made me feel better about the entire situation. The fact that he also sounded a little drunk only added to the humor of it all.

There were only four cells in the county jail, and I was in one of them alone. The four cells were situated as two cells facing two others, and as I sat up, trying not to let the blood rush and make me so dizzy I’d fall, I didn’t see them in the cell across from me either. It was possible both brothers were holed up together next door.

“Jess?” I said, wincing at the pain caused by simply moving muscles in my face.

“Luke?”

“Jess, are you in the cell next to me?”

“Yeah, bud,” he said. “Collin too.”

“Hey, Luke,” Collin said, sounding thoroughly depressed.

“How are you guys holding up?” I asked.

“I’m fine,” Collin said. “Jesse is… not so much.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I got fucked up, bro,” Jesse said.

“How fucked up?”

“It’s bad,” Collin said. “He got the worst of the beating, mostly because he stayed conscious. You got jacked up, but you were out cold after you got hit with the gun.”

“The gun?”

“Got pistol whipped from behind, like a little bitch-monkey,” Jesse muttered. “Oland is a bitch-monkey.”

“Jesse broke his guitar over Oland’s back, but Eugene and Arnold got ahold of him and did some pretty intense damage.”

“I’m fine,” Jesse muttered. “I’ll get a new tooth. Probably a gold one. That’ll sell some album covers.”

“They knocked out one of your teeth?” I shouted.

“Two of them,” Jesse said. “One in the front and one on the side. Bastards.”

“Dammit,” I muttered.

“How are you?” Jesse asked. “You okay?”

“I’ll be fine,” I said. “Just bruises. I’ll heal.”

My hand instinctively went over my ribs, and I seized up for a moment as the pain from simply breathing was too much.

“What are we going to do?” Collin asked.

“We wait on Owen and Luke,” I said. “I’m positive they are working on getting us out already. We just have to be patient.”

“I hate waiting,” Jesse said.

As if on cue, the door opened, and Eugene appeared. I was barely able to lift myself to a sitting position to talk to my brothers, much less anything else, but I was prepared to try and fight if Eugene entered and decided he wanted a few more shots.

Instead, he fished in his pockets and grabbed a set of keys, walking past my door and heading to the one next to it.

“Get up,” I heard him grumble.
