King of Myth

Aislinn

It was the day of our deadline.

The day we would finally save my sister from the despicable hands of the fae.

We were less than a mile from the meeting spot—some ancient ruin where the brothers used to train during their childhood. It was late afternoon, but a dense copse of trees was obscuring the sun. Random rays filtered through the overhead canopy, dust motes dancing in their dusky light.

The farther we walked, the darker the forest became.

Kieran directed us to a small, off-beaten trail. It veered into a darkness so thick I could barely see Kieran standing right in front of me. Silently, he took hold of my hand and drew his sword with the other. Eamonn pressed in close against my back. I heard his daggers slide free of their sheaths.

We traversed the trail in silence, wary of every sound or flicker of movement. I couldn’t see anything, but I trusted the brothers to guide us with their superior fae eyesight. Branches scraped at my face and snagged in my hair. Leaves crunched beneath my every step and my breathing quickened with panic.

It was unnerving to be sightless.

What felt like an eternity later, the heavy darkness began to ease and I could see the distant silhouette of a castle ruin through the trees. Kieran stopped us before we cleared the forest.

“Promise me, Eamonn,” he said without preamble. His solemn gaze collided with his brothers’. “Whatever it takes.”

Eamonn clenched his jaw and then he sighed. “Aye, I promise.”

The weight of his words settled over us. It was impactful, even though I didn’t know what he was promising.

Kieran’s hand tightened around mine and he nodded briskly at Eamonn. “Thank you, bràthir.” His hardened eyes swept over me next, and for a brief moment they softened. “Aislinn… do you have your dagger?”

I held it up wordlessly, fighting a swell of disappointment. We were standing on the precipice of battle and I had hoped for something more meaningful, more heartfelt. But Kieran had made his feelings for me very clear the other night.

I was an obligation, and maybe even a friend.

But nothing more.

“Don’t be afraid to use it,” Kieran reminded me. He rolled his shoulders back and raised his sword, turning his gaze toward the ruin. “Torrin will stop at nothing to get what he wants.”

“What does he want?” I whispered as dread clawed its way into my stomach.

Kieran’s features had shifted into that of a hardened warrior. Cold. Brutal. Lethal. His voice dripped with anger. “Torrin wants revenge.”
