Twenty-six. If things had been different, Kekoa might be living in Hawaii with his ohana and celebrating Ikaiaâs twenty-sixth birthday in two days instead of memorializing his little brotherâs short life.
What would Ikaia be doing now? Would he look like Kekoa? Makalena or Lahela? Would he have joined the Army like their dad or pursued baking like Auntie Lisa? An ache welled within him at all the questions that would never be answered because of him.
âThis is your fault, you know.â
Kekoa glanced up from his computer screen. Lyla stood in his doorway, arms folded, hair streaked in a vibrant purple today.
âI told you purple wasnât your color.â
She rolled her eyes. âNot that.â She thumbed over her shoulder. âThat.â
He rolled his chair back and she stepped aside so he could see into Director Walshâs office where he and Jack and two other people, a man and woman, were in a serious conversation.
âWho are they?â
âNicolás says Department of Energy.â Lyla tipped her head back. âHe said theyâre here to chat with us about the message you found with Elinor last night.â
âIt wasnât a message, it was a warning.â
âAnd thatâs probably why the government is involved. You ready?â
He rolled back to his desk. âIâll be there in a minute.â
Lylaâs eyebrow rose. âWhat are you working on?â
âIâm waiting on a message fromââ His computer dinged. Holding his breath, Kekoa clicked on the message. âNothing,â he grumbled. Leaning back in his chair, he ran his hands through his hair, frustrated. âIâve got to be missing something.â
âIs this why youâre not eating?â
âWhat?â
âYesterday you skipped lunch. This morning I brought in breakfast tacos, and yours is now sitting in the fridge. Weâre closing in on lunch, and I donât think Iâve heard a peepânot even when Nicolás teased Jack by calling him burrito.â
âIt was chimichanga.â
Lyla blinked. âWhat?â
Kekoa sighed. âBrynn called Jack her chimichanga.â
âI think thatâs why Nicâ Never mind.â She looked concerned. âWhatâs going on? Is it the assignment? I thought you brought up valid points in this morningâs meeting. Jack and Walsh must think so too if they brought in the DOE.â
âThey might be valid, but they donât really prove anything, do they?â Heâd spent another long night digging into the dark web, trying to find somethingâanythingâon Luka Ceban or his brother-in-law, Dima Grosu, and now someone with the username Wonderboy64. And so far he had nothing but more stress. âWhat if itâs her?â
Lyla shrugged. âWhat if it is?â
He spun in his chair. âItâs not.â Why did he feel so sure of this? âIn an hour, I can find a way into most financial institutions. In half a day, I can probably shut down some citiesâ power and water supplies. Give me a week, and I canââ
âHack into the National Security Agency.â Lyla put her hands up. âI know, I was there.â
âWell, you were sunbathing in Guam, but my point is that itâs not completely lolo to assume someone else might be behind the emails coming from Elinorâs computer. Or that someoneâs setting her up.â
âBut why?â
âI donât know.
