Chapter Five

The music was loud, the dance floor was packed and Amanda didn’t lack for partners. She had enjoyed her day off so far and now was especially enjoying being the new girl at the dance. But when the band took a well-deserved break, one of the men followed her back to her table where Rosie was waiting for her. He was a good dancer, but she had no interest in seeing any more of him. She was there to dance, not to pick up men. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for the man to realize that there was no future in hitting on her. As soon as he sensed her attention was wandering, he excused himself and walked across the floor to join his friends.

“What was wrong with him?” Rosie asked with a puzzled look. “I thought he was cute.”

“Nothing. He was cute.”

“You didn’t seem interested.”

Amanda shook her head. “Not my type.”

“What is your type?” Rosie asked.

Good question, Amanda thought. She knew what wasn’t her type. Arrogant doctors who kept their marital status a secret. Sheiks who were too rich and too spoiled for their own good. She’d made one terrible mistake by falling for the doctor, she was not going to make another by falling for an unavailable sheik. So why had she not given the nice, attractive man—who wasn’t a bad dancer, either—a chance?

She didn’t know. She only knew that he seemed boring. Maybe it was time she reconciled herself to boring. That is, if she wanted what Rosie had. A husband and kids. Because exciting men were usually not marriage material. Amanda was getting too old to go out just to have a good time. It was time to look for a husband.

Rosie was waiting for her answer.

“My type? I want a family man. Someone who’s ready to settle down.” Not a party animal who has to be surrounded with bright lights and crowds of friends all the time. “Who wants what I want. The rose-covered cottage and a picket fence.” Not someone who’s only happy in a mansion or an estate. “Who comes from a similar background.” Humble beginnings, not raised to wealth and position. “Someone who doesn’t come with a lot of emotional baggage.” Like a recently deceased girlfriend.

“Well that doesn’t sound too hard to find,” Rosie said. “There are probably some like that in this very room.”

Amanda looked around the room at the couples standing at the bar or sitting at tables taking a break from the dancing. Yes, there probably were some likely candidates right here under her nose. She ought to be looking more carefully, but she just couldn’t force herself to do it. Right now it seemed like an overwhelming task.

“The problem is,” Amanda admitted, leaning across the table to confide in her friend. “That I’m not attracted to that type, the solid, sensible kind that are ready to settle down behind a white picket fence. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I always seem to fall for the ones I shouldn’t.
