LUNA
I notice Will whispering with his mom, and I know itâs about me. I wonder what theyâre saying. His family is lovely, and I canât help but think how lucky he is to have a mom who so clearly dotes on him and cares about how heâs doing. My mom hasnât even called me since sheâs been away, and I know Marty must have been in touch with her to tell her about the threat. I canât believe how much theyâve both been keeping from me. I understand why they hadnât told me about the threatsâI know they didnât want to worry meâand I get now why they were so insistent on hiring a bodyguard for me. But the fact that they knew about the threats and kept pushing me out onstage and into the public eye makes me angry.
âAre you going to Jessa and Kitâs baby christening?â Kate asks, shoving between Will and his mom. âThey invited me.â
âHadnât planned on it,â Will says. âI have to work.â
It jars me, hearing him say that. It reminds me that Iâm only a job for him. A couple of days ago I wanted him to quit the job, and now Iâm upset that he thinks of me as a client. These feelings Iâm having donât make sense. I keep trying to ignore them, tell myself that Iâm being an idiot, but I know Iâm starting to fall for him.
Seeing him and how he interacts with his family has only made him more attractive. He makes me feel safe, and his honesty is like a searchlightâI feel like I canât hide anything from him, nor do I want to. When he looks at me, I get a flutter in my chest that feels like a million hummingbirds taking flight, and I find myself wanting to confess things to him Iâve never told anyone before. He makes the truth come tumbling out, and thatâs uncomfortable and confusing and scares me, because the truth can be used as a weapon. And most of all, Iâm worried because I donât want to feel like this, especially about someone who I donât think feels the same way for me.
âDonât let me stop you,â I say, my voice cooler than I mean for it to sound. âYou should go. Take a day off.â
âWhy donât you come too?â Kate asks brightly.
âNo,â Will cuts in fast. âIâm sure Luna wouldnât want to come.â
Is he saying it because he doesnât want me to come or because he genuinely thinks I wouldnât want to go?
âWhy donât you ask her?â Willâs mom says, her eyes drilling into him.
Will turns to me. âDo you want to come?â he asks.
âPlease come!â Kate says. âJessa and Kit wonât mind.â
I glance over at Will. Heâs looking at me, waiting on my answer.
âSure,â I answer. âIâd love to.â I donât know why I say it. Maybe itâs because I want to see how he responds. His eyes widen slightly, and the smallest smile pushes at the edge of his lips.
