I heard viral load almost undetectable and T-cell count high, which is apparently positive news. I also heard Truvada, two hundred milligrams, and Tivicay, fifty milligrams. After that, I didn’t remember much. Dr. Holt was going over my medications list, which ones to take and when. I stared at the bottles of pills in my hand and knew I’d be taking them for the rest of my life. I moved in a fog after that. I went home, packed a bag, and left Scarlett a note. I didn’t want to be around anyone.

I didn’t know if I’d ever want to be around people again. I just knew I needed to go home to Italy. I was scared to death I’d somehow pass on HIV to Scarlett, or anyone else for that matter. I couldn’t risk giving it to Ransom.

Going to Italy was my best bet. My parents’ house had a villa off to the side and I could stay there while I tried to figure out what I was going to do. My grandfather was buried on the property and I knew I would be too. I called my lawyer as well, setting up provisions in case something happened to me. I left the house to Scarlett and everything else to Ransom. I waited for the email to come through and then gave my electronic signature. I took a look around the house, grabbed my bag and left.
