Chapter twelve

Jacob

Ilook out on the deck, watching her as she sits in the jacuzzi. She is breathtaking.

It is hard for me to sit back and watch her from afar. Now that I know what she tastes like, feels like, my body aches to be apart from her. I want nothing more than to go join her, to kiss her, to be inside of her, to make her feel.

I can see her whole body is tense until it isn’t. Her shoulders relax as if she is breathing a sigh of relief.

I wasn't lying to her when I told her I remembered the conversation with Kelli. I do. That entire day is etched in my brain because that's when everything changed between us.

I slowly stand up from my chair and walk towards her, the water in the jacuzzi splashing against my feet. She looks up at me and smiles, her eyes sparkling in the dim light.

"Mind if I join you?" I ask, my voice low and husky.

She shakes her head, her hair falling in damp tendrils around her face. I slip into the jacuzzi beside her, the warm water enveloping my body.

We sit in silence for a few moments, enjoying the stark contrast of the hot water and the brisk chill of the Aspen air.

"That conversation that you thought you heard between me and Kelli, is that what caused you to be so distant from me?"

She nods but remains with her head leaned back and eyes closed.

"I wish you would have talked to me about it."

She shrugs her shoulders. I chuckle to myself. She's notorious for avoiding difficult situations.

"I would never intentionally hurt you, Hannah. I have always cared about you a lot. I thought you knew that."

"I thought I did, too."

"Do you know it now?" "

Jacob." She sighs as she opens her eyes and looks up at me. "I've been through so much shit with men. I'm not just guarded around you because of that incident. Like, I can't just wash it all away and have everything be fantastic between us."

"I understand. I can meet you where you're at."

"That's not a possibility. I just ended an engagement, and it wasn't a good relationship, regardless of what I thought at the time."

She runs her hands in the water, looking down at them rather than me.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying that we'll still pretend, but a relationship between us won't happen."

I nod, wishing I didn’t feel this sudden hollowness in my chest.

I have to respect her wishes, though, as I can feel my vulnerability crumble and defensive walls start to take its place.

Ok, back to Business Mode, it is, then.

I stand up and climb out of the jacuzzi. I look back at her.

"Gideon has something scheduled for us in an hour. I'm going to go down and eat breakfast and make some calls. I'll meet you back up here."

She closes her eyes and leans her head back again.

An hour or so later, we're in the conference room with the other couples. Gideon is rubbing his hands together excitedly.
