Chapter eleven

Alex

The kids are flying high and happy about their wins today. Nate’s seas turtle with the fart-blowing likeness of his mother was masterful, if not a bit over the top. I would normally try to stop that brilliant brain of my son’s, but honestly, Rochelle had it coming. She left the judging when he was awarded first place, giving Abbie, Violet, and me the credit alone.

I don’t want my children to have a terrible relationship with their mother, but until she comes back with a little humility, I can’t justify anything different. She wants respect while piling on negative comments, demands, and unrealistic titles, and her reputation might suffer. Honestly, the way my kids are getting their frustrations out is justified in my eyes.

“I’m going to take the kids out to the luau tonight,” Abbie said when we all meet in the lobby.

“What about us?” I ask as I glance around, figuring that Violet should be down shortly.

“Maybe take a little time for you and Violet,” Abbie offers. “You know, time that’s just–”

“Whoa, Abbie,” I hold up a hand, unable to come up with the right words.

“If you want my opinion, which I doubt you do, I think that you will be amazing together,” Abbie says. “She adores the kids and puts up with your attitude on your grumpy days. She’s my best friend and already like family, and honestly, I can’t fathom someone better suited for you,” she slaps me lightly on my face.

“I already love both of you dearly, so maybe take her on a date and see how that works for the two of you,” she says with a comical expression in my direction. “You might find the love of your life was right under your nose all this time.”

I humph in response, but those words have a lot of truth. “You sure you’re good with the kids?”

“I’m great,” she says as Nate and Ellie frantically wave from right outside the doors. “Ask her out!” She barks and follows them out.

My palms are sweating as I run them along my pants. I haven’t asked a woman out in decades, and now, I’m not sure how to process it properly, especially since it’s Violet. A week ago, I would have laughed at anyone who told me I was considering asking Violet out on a date But now, my feelings are jumbled. She’s the most constant presence in my life next to Abbie, but time away with her has somehow transformed all my feelings in a new direction. Maybe it just cleared the clutter in my mind to see what I’d been missing for years.

“Hey,” I hear Violet come up behind me as I pivot.

My breath catches in my throat as I take in her blue floral strappy dress. It brings out her eyes, and she’s even put her hair up in this loose-flowing style that frames her face. The shiny lip gloss and mascara highlight her best features as I try to find my voice.

“Hi,” I say as my voice cracks.
