Nick re-entered Grace’s bedroom and aimed immediately for the bed. Never had purple flowers looked so attractive.

“You didn’t handle that so well,” Grace said.

He gave a grunt and crawled beneath the covers. “No. I didn’t.”

“Why? She was worried about you.”

He allowed his vision to slide over her face and across the handful of light freckles sprinkled over her cheeks, curling his hand into a fist against an urge to touch them. “She’s always worried about me. Anne is a mother hen.” He turned his cheek into the pillow.

“You’ll have to talk to her.”

“I know. Later. Not now.”

Not now when he was so tired. He didn’t want to think about Anne anymore, or his parents. He didn’t want to figure out the meaning of this thing happening with him and Grace.

“Nick, what you said ...” She bit her lip, a gesture he’d seen her do a lot when she was nervous.

“Which part?” Sleep dragged at his eyelids.

“That part before they came ... about needing time. Is six months enough time?”

He dragged his eyes open. “Six months? Why?”

“I ... I have to do something in six months that I’m not sure I can.”

His gaze caught hold of the steady throb at the base of her throat. What would it be like to press his lips right there? He shook the thought loose.

“What is that?” he asked.

And her eyes brimmed with tears. “My papa’s getting married, and he wants ... wants me to come to the wedding, but ...” She hung her head.

“But what? Look at me.”

She raised her gaze and the pain reflected there, miles deep. “But that’s where my mama died.”

Her mama. The event that started everything.

“So if you could decide before then, I’d know if I have to go alone or not ...”

Why had she asked him to do this? Anyone else could take her: her uncle and his wife, Michael and Anne. Had she mentioned it to any of them? And six months wasn’t very long in the size of things. Six months to fix a lifetime of problems? Yet why did he feel obligated to do this for her?

He held out his hand. “Come here.”

She seated herself in the chair and laid her cheek to his chest. He breathed in the fragrance of her hair and the sweetness of her skin. “I’ll make you a promise. Are you listening?”

She nodded against his chest.

“I’ll do what I have to within six months, but regardless of the outcome, I’ll make sure you don’t go alone.”

She craned her head back. “You will?”

He smiled. “I promise.”

It was the least he could do. She had, after all, saved his life. Her hand moved across his chest, searing a groove in his skin, and he laid there absorbing the fire of it into his bones.

“Now, you’d better go downstairs,” he said huskily, “or rumors we don’t want will start.”

As if they hadn’t already.
