In the cafeteria line,

the lunch lady ladles

macaroni and cheese.

“Go on, do it!” the Nordlanders say.

I knock over Benjy’s tray,

wet pasta and cheese sauce cover his shirt.

“What’d you do that for?”

The guys congratulate me with pats on the back.

They push Benjy away.

I push Benjy away.

I didn’t even have a chance

to defend myself.

“He’s just a Jew,” one of the boys says.

He’s not worth my trouble.
