CSWP and the CQWP

In SharePoint 2007 and 2010, most WCM sites, whether they were intranet or Internet websites, made use of the CQWP to dynamically roll up content. The CQWP uses Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) to render content. SharePoint 2013 still uses XSLT; unfortunately, it is still limited to only being able to find content within a site collection.

The CSWP and other SharePoint 2013 search-related Web Parts use a JavaScript-based display template. JavaScript is client-side code; that is, it is sent from the SharePoint Server to the user’s device, where the browser interprets and executes it. Although this reduces the load on the SharePoint servers and simplifies implementing custom solutions, it also introduces challenges with Internet websites, where the devices of the site’s visitors are numerous and cannot be controlled or dictated by an organization. Many of the new default display templates used by the search-related Web Part rely on JavaScript to render the content. Users can disable the use of JavaScript, and therefore the browser would display SharePoint 2013 pages as blank pages. The CSWP does provide a property, AlwaysRenderOnServer, which when set to true uses server-side XSLT-based rendering, instead. The number of visitors to a SharePoint 2013 site who have JavaScript disabled might be few, but it is something to keep in mind when developing solutions.
