The car ride to Dalworth Golf Club is filled with Navin’s excited chatter as he and Jordan discuss the kind of photos they want to take.

A part of me recognizes the adorable juxtaposition they make as I watch them through the rearview mirror: Navin grinning wide and gesticulating as he speaks, while Jordan hums and nods his attention, slumped comfortably in the back seat next to him. But the other part of me, the part I can’t ignore despite the endearing scene, is too concerned for my best friend’s heart.

Quincy must also still feel the same because he keeps his eyes on the road, determinedly blocking out their conversation. We’ve both seen enough movies and read enough books to know that something is going to go wrong. Sighing, I shift my focus down to my camera, fiddling with the lens cap.

A few moments later, Navin pops his head between the gap in the seats, glancing eagerly between me and Quincy. “Are we there yet?”

Quincy chuckles, tapping on the steering wheel. “Yes. This time, we actually are.”

At this, Jordan leans forward as well, head squeezing in beside Navin’s as Quincy turns onto the smaller country road ahead.

A large estate opens up before us, the central manor house looming at the end of the drive. Beyond it are the vast rolling grounds of perfectly manicured grass, and I can just make out the tiny pinprick flags marking out the golf holes.

“Whoa,” Navin whispers. “Remember, Iyanu, when I was saying that it looks like my uncle’s place in Monaco? Seeing it in person now, I was wrong. It looks more like the estate in Scotland.”

Despite the genuine intent behind the statement, I can’t lose this opportunity to tease him. I gasp, putting on an exaggerated conservative RP accent. “Why, of course! But are you sure it isn’t more like his château in France?”

The brothers burst out laughing.

Navin clutches his chest in mock outrage, putting on the same posh voice. “How rude! I shall have a word with your parents about this insolence.”

“Oh, my sincere apologies, dear sir. It seems all that one-percent energy that just jumped out made me temporarily take leave of my senses.”

This starts another bout of laughter, Navin doubling over with Jordan falling across his back, Quincy driving next to me trying not to choke and crash.

Navin clutches my arm, his words breathy between giggles. “I actually love you.”

Smirking, I blow him a kiss.

Our laughter eventually dies down as Quincy pulls into the parking lot, and we all file out the car, wrapping our coats tighter against the chill.

“How long till our appointment?” Jordan asks.

“I guess we have about fifteen minutes.”

Then the sound of a loud car horn has us all turning to the shiny black SUV gliding across the carpark and into the space across from us.

There’s a beat of silence, and I glance at the others confused.

“Isn’t that Heather’s car?” I ask.

“Yeah,” Quincy responds.
