Chapter 4
When Calam woke it was dark outside the tall, paned windows of the luxurious room, the heavy velvet draperies pulled aside to give a view of the night sky through a film of delicate sheers. Inside, a tall lamp burned, casting dim, golden light and shadows. Beside him, Ilanaâs body was warm. He turned onto his side and found her awake.
âWatching me sleep again?â she asked him, her smile lazy and utterly seductive.
âYouâre lovely when you sleep,â he told her truthfully.
âIt seems youâve gotten to see a lot of that these last days.â
âI donât mind. There are worse things than to watch a gorgeous woman sleep. Like Sleeping Beauty, you are.â
âExcept that she was a virgin, wasnât she?â
âIn some of the tales, perhaps.â He grinned. âI much prefer this version, with my Beauty wanton and willing.â
âYouâre a flatterer,â she said, her cheeks going a bit pink. Charming.
âAye, a bit, perhaps, but itâs the truth.â
âWhere are the others? Do you know?â she asked. âLuka and Konstantine. Ever.â
âGone. Itâs difficult to say. Theyâll return when they want us again, no doubt.â
âHow long did I sleep this time?â she asked him, stretching, her arms over her head.
He loved to see her like this. Her blonde waves mussed, her dark blue eyes heavy lidded, with sleep or passion. She was so damn lovely. Achingly soâwasnât that what it was called sometimes?
âCalam?â she said, a question in her tone.
âAch, apologies. Wool gathering. Iâm not certain how long youâve slept. I slept myself. But I think it was yesterday we were with them, so all day, all night last night and into evening again.â He stroked her cheek, her skin like satin under his fingertips. She shivered, and he loved that she did, just from him touching her face. âHow do you feel? Are you well?â
âYes. Wonderful. Andâ¦â
âWhat is it, Ilana?â
She paused, biting her lower lip, her white teeth coming down on that plump, pink flesh. âI was going to say that Iâm glad youâre here with me.â
âSo am I,â he told her. âIâm glad we have a chance to talk, just the two of us.â âAh. What about?â
âWell, itâs a strange thing, this life, isnât it? Itâs not often I really get to know anyone very well before theyâre either Turned, or become too old to be eligible, or⦠sometimes they arenât people I want to do more than fuck, anyway. Not that theyâre bad people, any of those who come here. But there isnât always a connection that goes past the physical chemistry. And sometimes even thatâs fleeting.â
âBut you⦠feel some connection with me?â
âYes,â he answered simply. He didnât see any reason to deny it. âDonât you, Ilana? It seems so to me, though weâve not had the opportunity to speak of itâor much of anythingâbefore now.â
She was looking at him carefully, and he could see the same wonder on her face he felt himself. He was amazed again at that strange sense of intrinsic guilelessness in her, given where they were, the things that had brought them together.
